Device Mockup Export with Transparent Background

Device Mockup Export with Transparent Background

When your project uses a device frame on an iOS device recording, you can export the device mockup as a standalone video with a transparent background — perfect for compositing over custom backgrounds or uploading directly to App Store Connect.

When Is This Available?

The Device Mockup section appears in the Export sheet when both conditions are met:

  • Your recording is an iOS device recording (iPhone or iPad captured over USB).
  • A device frame is enabled in the inspector.

How to Export a Device Mockup

  1. Press Cmd+E to open the Export sheet.
  2. Scroll to the Device Mockup section at the bottom.
  3. Choose a Size preset (see below).
  4. Choose a Codec — HEVC or ProRes 4444.
  5. Click Export Device Frame with Alpha.
  6. Pick a save location — the file is saved as a .mov.

Size Presets

The Size picker appears in the Output section and applies to both the standard MP4 export and the device mockup export:

  • App Store 6.7" Portrait — 886×1920px. Required for iPhone 15/16 Pro Max App Store previews.
  • App Store 6.5" Portrait — 886×1920px. Required for iPhone 11/12/13/14 Pro Max App Store previews.
  • App Store 6.7" Landscape — 1920×886px. Landscape variant for 6.7" previews.
  • App Store 6.5" Landscape — 1920×886px. Landscape variant for 6.5" previews.
  • Original — Uses the device frame's native aspect ratio at your selected quality level.

Codec Options

  • HEVC with Alpha (default) — Small file sizes, hardware-accelerated encoding. Compatible with Safari, Keynote, Final Cut Pro, iMovie, and DaVinci Resolve. Best for most workflows.
  • ProRes 4444 — Lossless quality with very large file sizes. Use this for professional compositing in After Effects or Motion where you need maximum quality.

What Gets Rendered

The device mockup export renders only:

  • The video playing inside the device screen area
  • The device frame PNG overlay
  • Device shadow (if enabled)

Everything else is excluded — no background, annotations, subtitles, cursor effects, or camera overlay. The area around the device is fully transparent.

App Store Preview Videos

To create an App Store-ready preview video with a device frame:

  1. Record your app on an iPhone via USB.
  2. Add a device frame in the inspector.
  3. Add any zoom effects, subtitles, or edits you want.
  4. Open Export (Cmd+E).
  5. Select App Store 6.7" Portrait (or the appropriate size for your device class).
  6. Click Export for a full MP4 with background and all effects — this is your App Store preview.

If you need the transparent version instead (to composite over a custom background in another editor), use the Device Mockup export with the same size preset.

Tips

  • HEVC alpha files are typically 50–100x smaller than ProRes 4444. Use HEVC unless you specifically need lossless quality.
  • The export uses Metal GPU rendering — the same pipeline as the standard export — so performance is fast.
  • All 27+ device frames are supported, from iPhone 6s through iPhone 17 Pro Max, plus iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iPad mini.
  • HEVC alpha MOV files can be dropped directly into Keynote — the video plays with a transparent background over your slide.
