Screenshot Studio: Capture, Edit, and Export Screenshots
Screenshot Studio
Highlight Studio includes a full screenshot editor alongside the video editor. Capture any part of your screen, style it with backgrounds and annotations, and export a polished image — all without leaving the app.
Capturing a Screenshot
There are several ways to start a screenshot capture:
- Menu bar — Click the Highlight Studio menu bar icon and select "Capture Window" or "Screenshot..."
- App menu — File → Screenshot (Cmd+Shift+N)
- Keyboard shortcuts:
- Ctrl+Shift+S — Instantly capture the frontmost window (skips the selection step)
- Ctrl+Shift+A — Open the capture sheet to choose what to capture
Capture Options
The capture sheet gives you four options:
- Screens — Capture a full display. Thumbnails preview each connected monitor.
- Windows — Capture a specific application window. You can filter out Highlight Studio's own windows.
- Region — Drag to select a rectangular area of the screen.
- Import — Open an existing PNG, JPG, or other image file to edit.
The Screenshot Editor
After capturing, the screenshot opens in a dedicated editor with a live preview and settings sidebar.
Background
Choose from four background types:
- Wallpaper — Browse thousands of royalty-free photos from Pexels with search, quick tags, and infinite scroll
- Gradient — Pick from preset gradients or create a custom one with up to 3 colors and adjustable angle
- Color — Set a solid background color
- Image — Import your own background image
Shape and Style
Adjust how your screenshot sits on the background:
- Padding — Space around the screenshot
- Border radius — Rounded corners
- Shadow — Drop shadow intensity
- Aspect ratio — Choose from 16:9, 4:3, 1:1, 9:16, or match the original
Annotations
Add text, arrows, shapes, and blur masks on top of your screenshot. Annotations support custom colors, font sizes (4pt–72pt), and positioning.
Exporting
When you're happy with the result:
- Cmd+E — Export as PNG or JPG via a save dialog
- Cmd+Shift+C — Copy directly to clipboard (paste into Slack, email, docs, etc.)
Exports render at 2x resolution for sharp results on Retina displays.
Quick Capture Workflow
For the fastest workflow: press Ctrl+Shift+S from any app → the frontmost window is captured instantly → edit the background and style → Cmd+Shift+C to copy to clipboard. The whole flow takes a few seconds.
